PE and Sport

We teach a variety of subjects in PE as required and set out by the government in our National  Curriculum.

KS1 children will all do equal amounts of dance, gymnastics and games. In all of the subjects the children will be improving strength, stamina, flexibility and body control. At the same time the children will be building confidence and learning that sport is fun!!

KS2 children will be taught half termly sessions of dance, gymnastics, two different invasion games, striking fielding games and athletics.

Years 3&4 will also do some swimmimg. The children will not only improve body tone, stamina, flexibility, skills and co-ordination they will also learn about co-operation, teamwork, tactics and strategy. We also teach the children about the importance of exercise for a healthy body and hopefully the children will have a lot of fun in the process!!

The summer term will mainly be spent getting the children ready for sports day. The children will be practising for all the events we will be performinfg on sports day. There will be lots of other competitions during the summer in the form of rounders and cricket matches.

How's That....

This term we have been lucky enough to have some free cricket coaching from Daniel Westcott from Sussex Cricket. As you can see from the photo - the children are having great fun. We hope to enter some inter school cricket tournaments during the summer to put our new found cricket skills to the test!! I am hoping to have some inter class games during the summer term and hopefully offer an after school cricket club.

Please keep collecting your supermarket vouchers!

We are very lucky at Our Lady to have the fabulous facilities we have here. Our field is big enough for two football pitches with room to spare! This means plenty of room to teach football, rugby and hockey in the Autumn/Spring terms. During the summer we have a sizable athletics track marked out with lanes for hurdles and sprints. The field is also marked out for rounders and cricket. Our playground area is also quite big and is used during the year for netball, basketball and tennis. We have a vast store of PE equipment which is partly due to our very kind parents collecting sports equipment vouchers from supermarkets - please keep up the good work!!

Our after school cheerleading club has been very successful - as you can see the children have worked hard and had lots of fun. I would like to say a big thankyou to Miss Jackson for bringing her expertise to the club. It has been so popular we are hoping to have another after school club at some stage. We may even see some of the children cheerleading on sports day!!

Sainsbury's School Games

The Sainsbury's School Games ( is a unique opportunity to motivate and inspire millions of young people across the country to take part in more competitive school sport.

The Games have a strong Inclusive element resulting in more meaningful opportunities being available for young disabled people.

Over £128m of Lottery and Government funding is being invested to support the School Games.
Sport England, who are in charge of distributing Lottery funding and are supporting the engagement of Sports Governing Bodies and County Sports Partnerships.

At a local level, the Sainsbury's School Games are being delivered by schools, clubs, county sports partnerships and other local partners. There are almost 50 Local Organising Committees (LOCs) which are chaired by Head Teachers and these oversee the county festivals. There are many Sports Games Organisers (SGO) working with schools in cluster groups.

What this means for us at Our Lady Queen Of Heaven, is that since 2012 we have had the benefit of Sports Funding from the government to spend exclusively on improving sport in our school. Our SGO is Siobhan Nicoll, who organises the many inter school competitions we attend. The winners of these local competitions then go on to represent Crawley in the Sainsbury School Games finals, held in the summer. We have been to the School Games Finals twice, representing Crawley in the Qwicksticks hockey competition. We will again be entering the many competitions organised for us this year, in the hope that we can once again go on to represent Crawley in the School Games Finals.
This year we feel we are ready to apply for a recognised qualification for the sport we do in our school. This qualification is called The Sainsbury’s School Games Kite Mark.

What is the School Games Mark?

The Sainsbury's School Games Mark is a Government led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community. Schools in England are able to assess themselves across bronze, silver and gold levels of the Mark.

We are proud to say that we have now achieved Silver (2014 - 2015) and Gold (2015 - 2016)
